The New York Giants have decided not to wait until the end of the 2017 NFL season to fire head coach Ben McAdoo and general manager Jerry Reese Monday morning. The news comes less than 24 hours after the team lost to the Oakland Raiders to drop to 2-10 on the year.
Thereâs been speculation for weeks that McAdoo would not return in 2018, but the disastrous manner in which the head coach handled the benching of quarterback Eli Manning forced ownership to make a change before the end of Week 13. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo will be the interim head coach as New York begins the search for McAdooâs replacement.
so why not hire the coach of the best offense in football? McDaniels failed during his only head coaching stint with the Denver Broncos from 2009-2010,The Giantsâ offense was one of the NFLâs worst under Ben McAdoo,Womens Lamar Miller Jersey, but the 41-year-old might be the most sought-after coach when the regular season ends.
Matt Patricia, New England Patriots Defensive Coordinator
New England's coordinators are always going to be under consideration for head coaching positions, and the midseason transformation of the Patriotsâ defense could help Patricia land a gig this offseason. New England has allowed fewer points than anyone since Week 5.
Jim Bob Cooter, Detroit Lions Offensive Coordinator
Cooter might be their guy. At just 33 years old,If the Giants want to find the next Sean McVay, the offensive coordinator has helped Matthew Stafford perform like a borderline top-10 quarterback.
Teryl Austin, Detroit Lions Defensive Coordinator
Austin has gotten several head coaching interviews over the last few years, including one with the Giants in 2016 before the organization hired McAdoo. The 52-year-old has never been a head coach before.
Mike Vrabel, Houston Texans Defensive Coordinator
A decade after being named a first-team All-Pro linebacker, Vrabel is one of the leagueâs hottest young coaches. He coached Houstonâs No.1 ranked defense last season and was considered for the Los Angeles Ramsâ head coaching position.
Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski was suspended for one game on Monday, for the late hit he delivered to Bills cornerback TreâDavious White on Sunday afternoon in Buffalo.
Shortly after the news broke, Adam Schefter reported that Gronkowski will be appealing the ruling.
Neither bit of news was particularly surprising. After the national outcry over the hit â which was obviously dirty and unnecessary â the momentum was moving toward a suspension. And considering Aqib Talib and Michael Crabtree had their two-game suspensions knocked down to one-game suspensions just last week, Gronkowski has nothing to lose by going through the appeal process in an effort to stay on the field for the Patriots.
though, was very different,The Crabtree and Talib situation, as it involved two willing players involved in an altercation. They also were given a longer suspension with the idea that it would be shortened on appeal.
he can look to â of all people â Ndamukong Suh to provide the history. While every incident is different,If Gronkowski does hope to win his appeal, Suhâs victorious appeal in 2014 shows that sometimes the league can wipe out an issued suspension for dirty play.
then a member of the Detroit Lions and now a member of the Dolphins who would stand to benefit from Gronkowski being suspended for next Mondayâs meeting, nonchalantly stepped on the calf of Aaron Rodgers. Recognizing that the leg of the prized quarterback was underneath him,It was in Week 17 of the 2014 season when Suh, Suh casually stepped onto the calf again and put all 300 pounds of his weight on Rodgersâ leg.
The league ruled quickly: Suh was suspended one game. Considering it was Week 17, that meant Suh would be suspended for a playoff game.
Rodgers, at unnecessary risk of injury â specifically the second step and push off, which could have been avoided,â[Merton] Hanks ruled that Suh engaged in a non-football act which placed his opponent,â the NFLâs announcement stated.
Suh appealed the suspension. And somehow,Despite his lengthy history of dirty play and punishment from the league, he won.
In what is a common theme with NFL decisions, the suspension was issued to âsend a messageâ rather than to follow a set of known and established guidelines.
the punishment was too severe. Cottrell lessened the punishment to a $70,000 fine, allowing Suh to play in the Lionsâ playoff game the following week. (The Lions lost that game due in part to some historically bad officiating,Independent appeals officer Ted Cottrell ruled one day later that while he did not at all believe Suhâs excuse that his feet were numb, youâll recall.)
Now, the major â major â difference between Suh and Gronkowski is the element of the suspension being enforced for a playoff game. A one-game suspension in the regular season is not at all equal to a one-game suspension in the postseason. That factor cannot be overstated.
(Another factor that likely plays a role is the fact that White was apparently injured after the Gronkowski hit. Rodgers was fine.)
the factor of Suh being Suh and Gronkowski having a clean record might work to even the scales in that equation. Prior to the 2014 suspension,However, Suh had been fined eight times and suspended once for two games. That suspension came from ⦠stomping on a Packers player after shoving that playerâs head into the turf.
because he had avoided discipline for 32 consecutive games. But Suhâs history was well-established. In 2013, he received the largest-ever fine for on-field play after he took out a Vikings offensive lineman with a diving block at the knees. In 2012,Womens T.J. Ward Jersey,Suh was not âtechnicallyâ a repeat offender when he stepped on Rodgers, Suh was fined for kicking quarterback Matt Schaub in the crotch.
The fact that Suh was not a ârepeat offenderâ by the letter of the law only affected the level of punishment which the NFL could really impose. But it could still factor in to an arbitrator deciding whether or not to give the benefit of the doubt to the player.
the arbitrator did,Authentic Lamar Miller Jersey,In Suhâs case, and the suspension was wiped away.
but after an appeal, the punishment was reduced to just a $100,Authentic Bryan Anger Jersey,Authentic Johnathan Joseph Jersey,Then-Buccaneers safety Dashon Goldson would represent another case that might work to Gronkowskiâs benefit. Goldson was suspended one game for a hit he delivered on Darren Sproles in 2013,000 fine by Matt Birk â matching the heavy monetary punishment given to Suh for his low hit earlier that season. Goldsonâs suspension was wiped away even though the hit in question was violent and could have resulted in serious injury.
For Gronkowski, that history might provide at the very least a glimmer of hope.
the Bucs are now 4-8 this year and will spend the remainder of the season along with the offseason searching for answers as to what in the world went wrong. But for now,Womens Brian Cushing Jersey,The Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2017 NFL season is fading fast and that is now more evident than ever following their 26-20 loss to the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field on Sunday. With the loss, letâs take a look at a few things we learned from their tough loss to Green Bay in Week 13 action.
The offensive line failed to deliver for Jameis Winston
the offensive line struggled immensely. As a result, Winston had zero time in the pocket and was sacked a total of seven times and took 13 brutal hits as well. If the offensive line was able to protect Winston,Womens Bryan Anger Jersey,With Ali Marpet and Demar Dotson out, the Bucs may have just won the game â instead of adding another tough loss to the list.
Winston completed 21 of his 32 passes for 270 yards and two touchdowns, but he made one very big mistake during the game and one thatâs hard to fathom. The 23-year-old gunslinger fumbled during the second quarter which ended up being returned for a 66-yard Packersâ touchdown and a costly mistake for Tampa Bay. One of the primary issues surrounding Winstonâs game was him trying to do âtoo muchâ and take on too many roles. Sundayâs game proved this is an area he still needs to work on no doubt.
however, he hasnât had a 100-plus yard game in two years. All that changed, when Peyton Barber filled in for Martin versus the Packers this weekend. With Martin out with a concussion,Itâs no secret that Martinâs performance has been fairly sub par since returning from suspension. In fact, Barber shined. The young running back rushed 23 times for 102 yards and caught four passes for 41 yards as Martinâs replacement and took the challenge on gracefully. Since there hasnât been an explosive and concrete rushing attack this season with Martin at the helm, Barber could be the answer Bucs Nation has been longing for.
and considering the record of the opposition,The Detroit Lions get set to head on the road to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Authentic Brian Cushing Jersey, some might be counting this as an easier game.
and it's due mostly to the fact that the Buccaneers can pass the football with a top five areal offense. That should be enough to get the Lions attention this weekend in a critical game. What Tampa Bay lacks defensively and on the ground can certainly be made up through the air,That's simply not so, especially given how the Lions have struggled to defend recently.
What else makes the Buccaneers unique? Here's a look at breaking them down before Week 14.
who will likely go over 1,000 yards this year with ease. He piles up the touchdowns and is a big play waiting to happen for Jameis Winston. The Lions made Joe Flacco and his struggling cast of wideouts look great last week, and without a pass rush,Opposing Player To Watch: Mike Evans. A sneaky good season for Evans, the Buccaneers could feast again. Evans is the guy who could truly break the game.
Key Personnel Group: Pass catchers. Whether it's tight end or wide receiver, there is 10 touchdowns at tight end. Evans is a big play wideout, the Buccaneers have enough talent to make life miserable on the Lions secondary. Between O.J. Howard and Cameron Brate, and Winston has done a great job to step up in the pocket and find big plays down the field. The Lions have a challenge to stop this group.
Biggest Name Missing: Potentially Doug Martin, so it will be interesting to see where he's at in the protocol this week. Obviously, the Buccaneers are a lot more dangerous with Martin in the fold, Authentic Nick Folk Jersey,RB. Martin was shelved with a concussion last week, so the Lions will have to keep him in check if he does play. If he doesn't it would be a break for Detroit.
Can They Defend? No. With a 23rd ranked run defense and a pass defense that is close to the bottom of the league, but have not put everything altogether. The Lions should throw to win this weekend. If they can protect, the Buccaneers struggle in many facets defensively. They don't lack for impact players, it could be an ugly day for this group against a Lions passing attack which has been high flying at times. That could be tough news for the Bucs.
Headset Heads Up: In Mike Smith, it's fair to wonder if he will be able to dial up a game plan to slow down the Lions. After this season, the Buccaneers have a former head coach calling the plays defensively. Though Smith's group has struggled this season, Smith could be in demand as a head coaching candidate. He'll have a chance to prove himself by shutting down Matthew Stafford and adding to his frustration.
The decision came several days after McAdoo decided to bench quarterback Eli Manning for Geno Smith. Manning had started in 210 consecutive regular season games with the Giants,Authentic T.J. Ward Jersey, a feat dating back to his first career start against the Atlanta Falcons on November 21st,Womens Nick Folk Jersey, 2004. The move was met with much criticism around the league and made Giants co-owner John Mara "furious" over the damage it had done to the team's image.
"I don't see the need to make a head coaching change now," a Giants source told ESPN's Josina Anderson on Monday. "What's the point? Can't take back what happened last week with Eli [Manning]. But maybe a change attracts a bigger crowd for the last few home games. Could be a show of goodwill to the fans."
The Giants won 11 games in McAdoo's first season as head coach. Their season ended with a 38-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers in a wild card game. They failed to build off of that momentum this season, currently owning the second-worst record in the NFL alongside the San Francisco 49ers. The only team below them in the standings is the Cleveland Browns,Womens Johnathan Joseph Jersey, however, who have yet to win a game this season.
